AN proud of Armas, backs Daniel for top-10 finish

Athletics Namibia (AN) publicity and media coordinator Edward Kapewasha says the country should take pride in Alina Armas’ performance at the World Athletics Championships in Japan, despite the veteran long-distance runner finishing 35th in the women’s marathon.

Armas clocked a time of 2 hours, 36 minutes and 33 seconds in a field of 63 athletes. Kenya’s Peres Jepchirchir claimed gold after an intense duel with Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa, while Uruguay’s Julia Paternain took bronze with a time of 2:27:23.

Reflecting on the result, Kapewasha said Armas exceeded expectations given her slow season and limited international exposure this year. “I think this is a decent position if you think of it. She has had a slow season with very few international competitions to prepare, but she still managed to finish in that position,” he said.

Kapewasha admitted the team had hoped for a higher placing but highlighted the importance of celebrating Armas’ effort. “It’s not the result we would have ideally wanted, but as a nation I think we should take pride in it. She made the country proud, and that’s a huge milestone,” he added.

Meanwhile focus now turns to Paulus Daniel, who is set to compete in the men’s marathon this morning. During a brief interview with this publication yesterday, Kapewasha described the runner as disciplined and motivated.

“Paulus is a positive guy and a very disciplined athlete. Tomorrow’s race will be tough, but I trust in him and what he has managed to achieve over the past few years. I am banking on him to finish in the top 10,” Kapewasha said.

Armas and Daniel are the only Namibian track and field athletes competing at this year’s championships, after many of their compatriots failed to meet the qualification standards.

The championships which runs from 13 to 21 September, will see top athletes from across the globe battle it out for the honours.
