WALVIS BAY – A Kuisebmond resident who was detained last week for the alleged rape of his sister-in-law was granted bail last Thursday.
The Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court granted bail to the suspect, Andreas Mutjida, 41, when he made his second appearance on a charge of rape.
Mutjida stands accused of raping and impregnating his under-aged sister-in-law.
Magistrate Vicky Nicoladis granted him bail of N$3 500.
Mutjida was arrested last week after he was reported for allegedly raping the 14-year-old minor on several occasions.
The minor apparently lived with the couple.
Chief Inspector Erastus Iikuyu of the Namibian Police in the Erongo Region last week told New Era that the suspect, who is married to the minor’s sister, allegedly raped the child while her sister was away visiting her relatives.
According to Iikuyu, it is believed the alleged rape took place between December last year and January this year.
Both sisters are said to be currently pregnant.
During his bail application hearing, Mutjida told the court he would not be applying for legal representation and instead would defend himself.
The public prosecutor indicated they will not be opposing bail but requested that the matter be postponed to a later date, as the case was still being investigated.
The magistrate granted the accused N$3 500 bail and postponed the case to March 30.
