At its annual awards ceremony held on Saturday in Katutura the Basketball Artists School (BAS) rewarded its top performing learners who academically excelled in 2015.
Learners who performed well in general as well as those who garnered high marks were all equally rewarded, totaling 30 prizes given away on the day.
Special prizes went to Lino Nina Simao (40 points) and Jacobina Uushona (39 points) for their outstanding Grade 10 results, especially given the fact that they were also freely tutoring the younger BAS children in English and maths throughout the year.
The awards ceremony was attended by various prominent public figures, among them former Brave Warriors midfielder Collin Benjamin, secretary general of the Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC) Joan Smit and president of the Namibian Basketball Federation (NBF) Andrew Masongo.
After concluding the awards ceremony, BAS used the same platform to officially inaugurate its new streetball court (FIBA 3×3), funded by the International Basketball Foundation and the German Basketball Federation (DBB). FIBA 3×3 is played with one basket only, with 3 players in each team. The new BAS court has 3 separate playing fields.
Joachim Spaegele, representative of DBB and supporter of BAS, headed the ribbon-cutting ceremony. He was assisted by architect Klaus Brandt who volunteered to give professional advice to BAS and NBF office administrator Yyvonne Washaya, Masongo and Benjamin.
