Following recent reports that the president of the Namibia Rugby Union (NRU), Bradley Basson, would resign upon completion of the IRB World Cup, Basson has set the record straight.

He says he has no intention to resign, at least not for the time being, and would remain president of the NRU after Namibia’s World Cup participation, but would seriously consider his candidacy for re-election when his second term expires in March next year.

Basson is serving his second term after he was unanimously re-elected as NRU president earlier this year. He says the reason for his reluctance to avail himself for re-election is a combination of a lot of factors, but was quick to add that he would consider his position if a reputable board were to be appointed.

“I will only go with people who are dedicated and willing to serve the board in the best interest and progress of Namibian rugby.”

The NRU presidency makes provision for three two-year terms.

Namibian rugby has been engulfed in internal fights, ranging from accusations of racial bias when it comes to team selection, to loud outcries over the tortoise-pace transformation of the game.

Despite all the infighting, the IRB World Cup-bound Namibian rugby fifteen, the Welwitschias, will be making their 5th consecutive assault at the global showpiece.
