Bigger Mariental trade festival anticipated

The second edition of the Mariental Trade Festival, scheduled to take place from 12 to 14 September 2024, is set to be bigger and better.

Spearheaded by the Mariental Trade Festival committee, in collaboration with the Mariental Municipality, the festival plays a pivotal role in supporting and promoting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the region.

The chairperson of the Mariental Trade Festival committee Unomasa Kavita said the festival is an opportunity for SMEs to promote their products, and network with other entrepreneurs to pursue new opportunities.

“The objective behind the three-day festival is to encourage small businesses to market their products, and demonstrate their abilities. The festival also strives to provide quality family time, playing space for children, and relaxation areas for adults,” he said.

He added that compared to last year, interest in the festival has increased, as the organisers anticipate a 40% increase in exhibitors as well as visitors.

“The first event, held last year, drew over 1 400 people, and a 40% rise is expected this year. In terms of SMEs, interest in participating has nearly doubled from last year’s festival,” he said.

This year’s attendees may expect a variety of activities such as a merry-go-round, a play area for children and live performances by singers, dancers and drummers. The festival will also host a music show, which will feature some of the country’s biggest artists as well as local musicians.

Kavita said Namibian artist Spuzza has confirmed participation, and they are negotiating with popular group One Blood.

“We had them (One Blood) perform last year, with local artists from Mariental. But we are open to suggestions,” he said.

With agriculture being one of the key economic drivers in the region, the festival will include the marketing of many agricultural products.

“With regards to the farmers’ stall, we expect meat products like boerewors, lamb and a variety of vegetables. With the artisans that are coming on board, there are going to be leather goods and traditional clothes available for sale as well,” he stated.

As per its objective, which includes playing a pivotal role in supporting and promoting SMEs in the region, visitors can also expect to see various food stalls and various handmade craft on display.

Kavita said arrangements for this year’s festival were based on feedback from last year’s event, adding that stalls for SMEs are still available.

He advised SMEs to contact Linus Sinvula on 063245600 or 0814277001, or email lsinvula@marmun.org.na for additional information.
