WINDHOEK – Stefanus Bonifatius, of Rossmund Golf Club in Swakopmund was crowned the 2015 champion of Namibia’s most prestigious golf event on the calendar, the Bank Windhoek National Amateur Golf Open.
The tournament, held at the Windhoek Country Club golf course over the weekend, attracted a total of 63 players from Gobabis, Mariental, Omeya, Tsumeb, Swakopmund, Walvis Bay and Windhoek – playing over 54 holes in A, B and C divisions.
Due to recent showers the course played long and soft with the tall rough presenting a serious challenge to most of the players in the field. After 36 holes played on the first day, it was Bonifatius leading on even par, 142, with defending champion McPaul Ndeilenga, four shots back on 146.
Hafeni Nghinamwaami and Likius Nande lurked another shot further back on 147. Ffortunes fluctuated throughout the round on Sunday, when all the top players held their nerve and in the end resulted in a 5-shot victory for Stefanus Bonifatius, the new Namibian open champion.
At the prize-giving ceremony, Marco Swarts, NAGU president once again urged players to remain focused, especially the national team who departed for Uganda yesterday.
