A bungling car-breaker got stuck inside a vehicle that he had reportedly broken into after he jammed its remote-controlled locks but the car somehow locked itself. The suspect was found locked inside and sweating profusely.
The incident, likely to scare car-breakers, happened in the central business district (CBD) in downtown Windhoek last Thursday after its owner went for a meeting.
The suspect, only known as Daniel, was locked in a Volkswagen Amarok vehicle for about an hour-and-a-half sweating from the heat and lack of ventilation.
According to the vehicle owner, Shaun Seboa (34) – a Nedbank employee at the Aussplannplatz branch – he pulled up in front of Nedbank branch parking at Frans Indongo where he had come for a work-related meeting at 15h30 on Thursday afternoon. The meeting ended at 16h45.
“I got out of the vehicle and took my laptop bag as usual, got out and locked the vehicle. He (robber) either jammed the car or opened the door from the other side and sneaked inside,” related Seboa, who added that he locked his vehicle and checked if the doors were locked before leaving the car.
Seboa added that the alarm activated shortly before he entered the building only for him to receive a call later from someone who knows him, informing him that there was someone sitting in his vehicle. The robber took spectacles and a GPS but threw them in the car when he saw the police.
“I was surprised to see someone sitting in my car. I called City Police before we could unlock the vehicle. The robber was arguing and wrestling when the police took him away. He looked dehydrated when he got out of the vehicle,” added Seboa, who has opened a case against Daniel.
