City bring Arts to life

City bring Arts to life

Rudolf Gaiseb

The electrifying /Ae //Gams Festival Poetry, Comedy, and Theatre Night, the prelude of the Windhoek /Ae //Gams Arts and Cultural Festival, premiering today and ending tomorrow, highlighted the significance of preserving Namibian culture.

The event hosted by the City of Windhoek  at its headquarters on Wednesday night, brought together poets, theatrical artists, and comedians who, under the stars, on the stage, brought the city to life, revering the nation’s roots with their creative tapestries.

City Head of Tourism and Cultural Heritage Grace Pujatura emphasised the importance of celebrating arts and culture.

“Culture is one of the most important aspects of our economy that we have not given much attention to; therefore, the city took it upon itself to create a platform for the arts and enhance business opportunity within the fraternity,” she said.

The night was a chance to journey together with poets the likes of Franklin Shitaleni, Naledi Nakuta and Kuzaa Maamberua, alongside others, weaving rhythmic semantics that portrayed the impulsive and beautiful life in the city, inspiring art lovers.

Powerful and relatable theatrical performances highlighted that Namibia protects its land and preserves its cultural heritage, inherited from its ancestors, while adopting developmental practices that will benefit all.

Stand-up comedians, Wilbard Namwiha, Helmut Mahongo and Dennis Kaunda, among others, lightened the mood with hilarious punchlines.

Communication officer Lydia Amutenya said, the City is fully prepared to host the 2025 Windhoek /Ae //Gams Arts and Cultural Festival, scheduled for today and Saturday. Extensive planning and coordination have been undertaken to ensure a successful and inclusive event.

Pre-festival activities, such as the Poetry Night held on 23 April , have already set the tone for the celebrations . Additionally, a traditional games and cook-off event took place on April 5 at Paaltjies, featuring beloved Namibian games like Amagoes and Blikkies, as well as a Vetkoek and Potjiekos Cook-Off.

The Windhoek /Ae //Gams Arts and Cultural Festival holds significant cultural importance as it celebrates Windhoek’s rich diversity and artistic talent. Established in 2001, the festival aims to promote unity, cultural pride, and economic development through the arts .
“This year’s festival continues to build on its legacy by introducing new elements such as the expanded Fun Run with a 21km option and the inclusion of traditional games and cooking competitions . These additions aim to enhance community participation and celebrate Namibian heritage in innovative ways.

The festival also features performances from various cultural groups and artists, providing a platform for local talent to shine,” she said.
