Cricket Namibia hits the ground running

Cricket Namibia (CN), one of the country’s most successful federations, has started the year with renewed energy.

In a statement, CN highlighted 2024 as a phenomenal year filled with accomplishments that made a significant mark. Three standouts include: the FNB Namibia Cricket Ground, as the start of their stadium construction is setting the stage for an iconic venue to host world-class cricket.

Receiving the Federation of the Year Award at the Namibia Annual Sports Awards is proof of the hard work and dedication of everyone involved.

Their ICC scorecard ranking improved from 18th in 2020 to an impressive 5th in 2024, reflecting their commitment to excellence.

“Excellence is one of our core values, and it’s a principle we strive to embody both on and off the field. From administration to match-day performances, we aim to set the standard high and continually raise the bar,” CN shared in a statement.

In addition, it stated that cricket development in Namibia has been a powerful story of transformation. Across all levels, from grassroots t o elite performance, the growth has been immense. Their flagship programmes are thriving, including the Ashburton Kwata Cricket, which builds love for the game from the grassroots.

CN stressed plans to expand their pool of talented players, create a feeding system for the national side, and grow women’s cricket while developing squad depth for the senior men’s national team.

“With the FNB Namibia Cricket Ground taking shape beautifully, we are gearing up for an exciting year ahead. The stadium will soon be buzzing with activity, starting with the Namibia Sports and Leadership Centre opening on 20 January.”

This innovative multi-sport initiative aims to support the country’s most promising young athletes, empowering them to excel both in sports and academics.

They further revealed that their gym would be fully operational by April. “This premier training space will offer an unparalleled fitness experience, tailored to the needs of professional sportsmen and women. More than just a gym, it’s a space where top-tier performance meets excellence, setting a new standard for athletic training in Namibia.”

Additionally, indoor cricket nets, a cornerstone of modern cricket, will be introduced at the stadium. These facilities , designed for players of all skill levels, provide a weather proof environment for uninterrupted training.

“This stadium is more than a cricket ground. Think wellness, professional sports facilities, education, dining, conferencing, and recreational entertainment—all in one place,” CN noted.

For them, the year promises a packed calendar of cricketing action, with plans to host competitive international cricket on home soil. Windhoek is set to be the stage for exciting matches, culminating in the grand opening of the FNB Namibia Cricket Ground. This event, marked by an exhilarating T20 clash, promises to be an unforgettable celebration of the sport, the venue, and Namibia’s passionate cricket community.
