The case in which Deputy Prosecutor-General Jackson Kuutondokwa is on trial for allegedly driving while under the influence of alcohol will proceed on April 14 in the Regional Court in Katutura as the matter was remanded on Tuesday.

The alleged drunk driving incidents happened in 2012 and 2014. As in previous court appearances Kuutondokwa denied guilt when the matter continued on Monday.

In one case, Kuutondokwa faces a charge of driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor and a charge of negligent and reckless driving, as he allegedly caused an accident along Independence Avenue on April 8, 2012.

The second main charge and two alternatives date back to June 15, 2014 when Kuutondokwa allegedly again drove his car along Independence Avenue in Windhoek while under the influence of alcohol. On that occasion his car was also involved in a minor collision with another vehicle.

In that instance he denied that he drove while under the influence of liquor, or that he had occupied the driver’s seat with an excessive blood alcohol level.

The deputy prosecutor-general previously pleaded guilty in the High Court to driving while under the influence of liquor on December 8, 2002.

At the time Kuutondokwa was fined N$5 000, or 12 months’ imprisonment, of which N$2 500 or six months were suspended for three years on condition he is not convicted of a similar offence during the period of the suspension.

Last year Prosecutor-General Martha Imalwa said there is nothing she can do about the serial arrests of her deputy Kuutondokwa, who has been repeatedly arrested for drunken driving.

Sisa Namandje, who has argued cases against Kuutondokwa is now representing the deputy prosecutor general. Magistrate Alexis Diergaardt presided.
