WINDHOEK – After a grueling three hour training session in Windhoek last weekend, the Namibian Rugby Union (NRU) has selected a 27-member squad for a once off test against Botswana at the Hage Geingob Stadium on Wednesday.
Geraldine Louw, who has just won the national women’s title crown with her club Phoenix has been given the honour to skipper the Desert Roses, as the Namibian women’s rugby team is affectionately known and will be deputized by Naomi Titus of Reho Pandas. Action gets underway at 14h30 with a curtain raiser between Khomas Knights and Hardap Raiders at 14h30 in the Navachab regional tourney before the main clash at 16h00. The Entrance fee is N$10 per person. In the meantime, women’s rugby lauded NRU President Bradley Basson and the NRU board members for their continuous support and commitment towards the development of women’s rugby at all levels, while their financial and logistic support will go a long way in making Wednesday’s historic encounter a reality.
The Secretary-General of the Namibia Women’s Sports Association (NAWISA) Carol Garoes confirmed that NAWISA will foot the bill for the accommodation of both teams, while she also applauded Namibia Breweries for its valuable contribution and NRU CEO Sybrand de Beer, including the entire staff members at NRU for the logistical arrangements.
