Domestic worker ‘abuser’ gets bail

ONDANGWA – A 62-year-old pensioner, Selma Daniel, who was arrested for  allegedly abusing her domestic worker, has been released from custody on bail of N$5 000.

Daniel, now referred to by many on social media as (Ombulu Onduudhe-white person in a black skin), was granted bail towards the end of last month after she applied for bail at Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court.

She has been in custody since March at the Omuntele police station, following her arrest after allegedly abusing her domestic worker, a 16-year-old Angolan girl.

The court told her to report once a week at the Omuntele police station, as investigations are ongoing.

When she made her first appearance at Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court, she was denied bail.

She faces three charges: trafficking, violating the Childcare and Protection Act, and multiple counts of abusing, neglecting and abandoning a child, as well as starving and assaulting her on numerous occasions.

The girl was admitted to Onandjokwe Hospital, after which she was discharged and returned to her parents.

According to the police, the victim allegedly endured abuse from her employer since mid-last year, when she began working as a domestic worker.

Her alleged abuse came to light after a video about her condition went viral on social media, prompting police to act.

The victim claimed that she was often starved, worked without a break and slept on the floor in a shack without a door for a salary of N$500, which she never got paid.
