Organisers of the first-ever Fight Night mixed martial art (MMA) event held in the capital over the weekend have described it as a huge success.
The event saw over 20 participants from several African countries competing for top honours in various categories.
In an interview with this publication yesterday, Carlos de Soussa, who is one of the organisers of the event, said the event lived up to their expectations, as local mixed martial enthusiasts came in large numbers to support their local fighters.
“Definitely, the event went on as we anticipated. I would as well add that having seen the number of participants at the weekend event opened our eyes that the sport can grow massively in the country if good attention is given,” he said.
He added the event showed how much the sport is followed in the country but appealed for more support to get the sport to a higher level in terms of funding and participation.
De Soussa said that heading forward, they would like to host more events across the country.
“We are going to go back and sit and plan on the way forward. We would like to have more of these events in the future. We want to at least host three of these events per year. We are hoping we can have one at the coast, Windhoek, and northern part of the country,” he added.
Meanwhile, Namibia’s top martial fighter Veja Hinda beat Angola’s Ndonbe Poe in the first round of the main bout.
Some of the other results saw Adalberto Ntyama beat Mwelwa Nkhata, while Paul Nkolomba lost to Joveth Santana.
Dumildo Tchilala lost to Alister Kunene, and Bernad Chisenga lost to Grecio Lopes.
Arno Jacobs beat Nonthan Banda, while Damian Muller lost to Chomba Mwandila, and Geraldo Bok beat Nathan Chilenga. – mkambukwe@nepc.com.na
