Geingob Cup to build library

Proceeds from the 10th and final edition of the Dr Hage Geingob Cup will be directed towards building a Dr Hage Geingob Memorial Library.

This was revealed by Amos Shiyuka during the official launch of the cup at MTC headquarters in Olympia, Windhoek.

Shiyuka, the mastermind behind the annual cup’s success, confirmed that this would be the last edition of the tournament.

“We will have various teams competing for top honours at this year’s event, and we call on everyone to come and show their support. This year’s event will be unique, as the funds raised, including gate takings, will be used to help build the Dr Hage Geingob Memorial Library, part of an initiative to continue the late president’s legacy,” he stated.

This year’s event will take place on 19 October at Independence Stadium in the capital, and  will feature six teams, including defending champions of the Hage Geingob Cup, Eeshoke Chula Chula, who will face Debmarine Premiership champions African Stars, while in the women’s category, Ongos Ladies FC will take on defending champions of the cup, Girls and Goals.

Additionally, an exhibition match will see MTC’s celebrity team go up against the Danger Point celebrity team.

Speaking at the launch, Waldemar van Lieres of Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) emphasised the significance of this year’s event in honouring and celebrating the legacy of the late Geingob. “This cup is extra-special, not only because it marks the 10-year milestone, but also because it honours the legacy of Hage Geingob. As we start this tournament, we do so with deep gratitude for a leader who understood how sport could unite people and help build the nation,” he remarked.

Van Lieres further said NBL will contribute a total of N$1.5 million towards the final edition. “This isn’t just financial help, but a way of showing our continued belief in the values Geingob stood for, including unity, inclusivity and national development through sport.”

Shali Shindume from Bank Windhoek also highlighted the cup’s significance. “This cup is not merely a competition; it is a manifestation of Geingob’s vision to revive and advance sports, particularly soccer, in Namibia.

It stands as a testament to his unwavering belief in the importance of giving back to the very foundation of our society,” he said.
