GOBABIS – Blue Birds’ head coach Benhard Haimbodi says his team is not in the Southern Stream First Division League (SSFDL) to simply make up the numbers, but is determined to earn promotion to the Namibia Premier Football League (NPFL).
The Walvis Bay-based club, currently leading the SSFDL log standings with 32 points from 14 matches, has its eyes firmly set on top-flight football.
“We didn’t move up from the second division to be idle in the first division. We came here with a mission – to progress to the elite league,” said Haimbodi. “We will ensure our players are focused solely on football. They understand the club’s objectives, and are committed to achieving them.”
He praised his players’ discipline and dedication, adding that most have played together for a number of years, and share strong chemistry. “Our training sessions are intense, and the players always arrive on time. The unity and understanding in the squad are key to our progress,” he noted.
Haimbodi also highlighted the strong relationship between players and management as a driving force behind their success. “Communication and team spirit are exceptional. Discipline is non-negotiable at this club, and that’s what has kept us moving forward.”
While the team has respect for all opponents, they approach every match with the same intensity. “We don’t underestimate anyone. Every game is a battle, and we field our best squad every time.”
However, he pointed out the financial struggles the team faces. “We rely solely on the league grants – N$110 000 for 20 games. That’s not enough. A single trip to the south, like Keetmanshoop, can cost N$47 000,” he stressed.
Blue Birds lead Rehoboth’s Friends FC (27 points) and Eleven Arrows (25 points, with a game in hand), while Black Africa sits at the bottom with just two wins this season. – zngaruka@yahoo.com
