Man nabbed for possessing pangolin scales

RUNDU – A 48-year-old Angolan man Joao Kasanga was due to appear in court yesterday after he was allegedly found with pangolin scales during a sting operation last week by the Kavango West police.

The man was arrested after he had offered to sell the pangolin scales to undercover police officers.

“The Angolan suspect was nabbed at about 16h48 at Siya village.

It is alleged that an intelligence-driven operation led to the arrest of Kasanga, who was found in possession of two pangolin skins to the value of N$100 000,” the police said in its crime report.

He appeared in the Kahenge Periodic Court on Monday.

According to the police, the suspect was not in possession of an official permit from the environment ministry, which authorises him to possess such products.

The case was postponed to 8 March 2022 for investigation and for the suspect to acquire legal representation.

No bail was granted.

In an unrelated matter, the police in Kavango West also arrested a pensioner for alleged crimen injuria and assault through threatening on Friday evening at Kapako.

It is alleged the suspect insulted the complainant and threatened to kill her.

The 60 years old man was arrested, and police investigations continue.

In another crime incident, the Ncaute police arrested two men for alleged stock theft, which was reported to have occurred during the periods of August and 10 December this year at Hondepeke village in Kavango West.

According to the police, it is alleged the two suspects, who are between the ages of 20 and 30, stole and slaughtered 12 goats and five chickens valued at N$16 220.

They were also due to appear in court yesterday.

Still at Ncaute police station, a case of dealing in cannabis and Contravention of Arms and Ammunition Act 7/1996 was opened after a 39-year-old suspect was found in possession of ammunition without a licence last Friday at about 13h54 at Ceha village.

According to the police, it is alleged the suspect was also found in possession of four parcels, 21 ballies, one plastic of cannabis seeds, and one live ammunition of a shotgun during a police search.
