Woman allegedly kills boyfriend with spear

ONGWEDIVA - A 39-year-old woman is set to appear in the Eenhana Magistrate’s Court today for allegedly taking the life of her 34-year-old boyfriend.

It is alleged that the suspect killed her boyfriend on Tuesday night by stabbing him with a spear during a heated argument at her house at Onaame village in the Ohangwena region. The deceased was identified as Gabriel Taapopi.

The distressed Ndahambelela Shinana (68), who is the mother of the suspect, narrated that she and the rest of the family woke up around 23h00 to a heated argument between her daughter and her now- deceased boyfriend. The two had just arrived from a local cuca shop.

“I went to their bedroom, and found my daughter holding a spear, threatening to stab Taapopi. She argued that she was tired of Taapopi, as he kept following her even after she had told him that she no longer wants to continue with their relationship,” Shinana said.

“Her exact words were: ‘I told you to stop following me. I told you to stay away from our house. I will kill you’. I told my daughter to put down the spear, but she threatened to stab me too. She pushed me to the ground, as I tried to separate them. I got scared, and started screaming for help,” she continued.

The distraught mother said she then decided to run to the neighbour’s house when no one came to her aid.

But by the time she came back with the neighbours, the suspect was already dragging the lifeless body of Taapopi out of the homestead, with blood pouring from his neck.

She said the suspect eventually fled from the scene.

“I am speechless; I don’t know what to do. My daughter has brought a big problem to my family by killing someone,” she lamented.

Ohangwena police crime investigator Zachariah Amakali said the suspect was arrested on Wednesday after she was found hiding in the bushes.
