Zambezi ready to host Independence Day

KATIMA MULILO - Zambezi governor Lawrence Sampofu has expressed excitement following the official announcement that the region will for the first time ever host the Independence Day celebrations on 21 March. The information and communication technology ministry's executive director Audrin Mathe announced last week that the 34th Independence anniversary will be held in Katima Mulilo under the theme ‘A People United for Prosperity’. “We are very excited to hear that Independence Day celebrations will be held here in the Zambezi region for the first time in history.

It is an opportunity for our people to enjoy.  All these years, our people have been to other regions to celebrate the day,” Sampofu said upon enquiry yesterday.

He noted that there is already a regional preparatory committee which is working in conjunction with the national preparatory committee to deal with logistics-related matters to make the day a joyous occasion.

“We will have to see how we are going to harmonise our challenges of chairs, tents and portable toilets for the day. We will liaise with the national preparatory committee to deal with these challenges. We have formed a regional preparatory committee to deal with issues of finance and logistics,” Sampofu said.

President Nangolo Mbumba will deliver the keynote address during the national event.

Mathe said as preparations unfold for this year’s celebration, the government extends an invitation to Namibians from all corners of the country to join in commemorating the selfless acts of sacrifice which paved the way for Namibia’s freedom.

Like other national events, he indicated that Independence Day celebrations are rotated among the regions. Last year’s celebration took place in Outapi, Omusati region.

Additionally, he informed the public that they can anticipate a diverse array of cultural performances, musical acts and entertainment activities. Importantly, Mathe assured those unable to attend in person that the event will be livestreamed on various social media platforms, and NBC-TV and radio services.
