Industry Loop: Distractions

Home Time Out Industry Loop: Distractions

Favourite rapper, D-Jay recently said: “I don’t go to studios that are overcrowded”. This statement seems to have rubbed the music world in the land of the brave the wrong way. He continued saying that he wants to go to a “clean” studio that will only have people that will contribute to the final product.

His stance is particularly problematic because, well, in Namibia a recording studio NEEDS to be mos filled with people that are high on cough syrup and annoying “groupies”. Seemingly that is the only way one can record a hit song. Yeah, with a studio filled with people high on cough syrup and groupies.

D-Jay’s statement will only bother you if you are not serious with your music! You are bothered by D-Jay’s stance because you are high on cough syrup. You are bashing D-Jay because well…he does not want your groupie a$$! I’ve said it before, and I will say it again…

Namibian entertainers watch too much American TV. Maybe in America it is “cool” to have high people and groupies in studios but that is simply not a way of life for us in Namibia. Namibia is a special country. We have our own way of doing things. Having high people and groupies in studios is not one of them. That’s that western way of doing things. So I can understand why D-Jay is visibly annoyed by some recording studios that harbour these conditions.

One can argue that it is not about your studio but about the art you create. True. However you cannot deny the reality that high people and groupies can be an annoying distraction. I believe an entertainer can get the best out of themselves in a distraction free environment as opposed to an environment littered with distractions.

You can think without being influenced by anything and lace down your verses without distractions. I said last year around April that Hip Hop coming out at the time is simply trash because it sounds so weed infested. That slow, weird…uncomfortable and un-rhythmic Hip Hop was inspired by exactly that…high people and groupies.

Because at the time of recording…it seems cool. But when you record, you don’t record for the people in the studio. You record having a target market in mind and you record telling that markets stories! Hence I give D-Jay a stamp of approval on his refusal to work with ANYONE who invites him to studios with that exhibit these conditions. Stop doing music for your friends and start thinking of the broader picture, YOUR MARKET! Mara…I will not get into the market talk again. I’m tired of talking about it! Just tired! I’v spoken about the need for market research maar julle nxa nie luisteri! D-Jay? Salutations!

Until the next Loop, we say #GMTM
