Khaibasen ascend to top as title battle intensify in Kunene league

OPUWO – Outjo-based outfit Khaibasen Football Club has taken charge of the Namport Kunene Regional Second Division Football League after putting up an excellent display over the weekend.

The free-scoring Khaibasen recorded eight goals in two encounters, following a 2-1 away-from-home game against Sixty Eleven before demolishing !Ugab FC 6-0 at Outjo’s Etoshapoort stadium.

The latter sits at the top of the log-standing with 19 points garnered from five wins, a draw, and one loss after eight games.

The weekend also saw league favourites Robber Chanties holding their ground at Khorixas’ Herbert Conradie Stadium, continuing their remarkable streak with eight goals scored in two matches.

They delivered a solid performance, defeating Okarindi Komutati and Epupa Zebra Stars, each with a scoreline of four goals, sending both teams home empty-handed.

Epupa Zebra Stars’ woes continues as they once again failed to collect any points, suffering a 3-1 defeat in Kamanjab against Grootberg United.

Epupa coach Uatjiruapi Tjingorori said despite the team’s readiness for the two matches over the weekend, they struggled to take advantage of their opportunities, allowing their opponents to capitalise instead.

He remains optimistic that the team will recover, as they believe the title race is still wide open, and any team has a chance to claim the championship.

The latter sits second from the bottom with five points.

In other weekend matches, Green Dangers triumphed over Golden Wolves 3-1 on Sunday, further aggravating the struggles of the Opuwo-based team, which had also suffered a defeat against Etosha United (3-2) on Saturday.

Golden Wolves now sit at the bottom of the league standings with just one point from eight games, intensifying their relegation woes.

Other Saturday encounters saw Kunene NamPol securing a 3-1 victory over Etosha United, while !Ugab ended in a 1-1 draw against Young Eagles.

On Sunday, Okarindi Komutati dominated Grootberg United with a 4-0 win in Kamanjab.

Kunene NamPol achieved another win against Green Dangers, finishing 1-0.

Sixty Eleven delivered the most impressive performance of the weekend by defeating Young Eagles 7-1, allowing them to escape the relegation zone.

Okarindi Komutati and Robber Chanties are trailing behind Khaibasen in second and third place, with 15 and 16 points, respectively.

Green Dangers and Kunene NamPol are just behind them, both with 14 points.

In positions six through 10, !Ugab, Etosha United, Grootberg United, Sixty Eleven and Young Eagles round out the standings.
