Learners frequently reflect on the commendable attributes of their educators with great fondness. They recall those teachers who demonstrated genuine care, and provided unwavering support and encouragement.
Ndipanda Thomas asserts that the performance of pupils is a direct reflection of the dedication exhibited by their teachers.
As a teacher at Epako Secondary School, he expressed his desire to be remembered as an educator who inspired learners to think creatively and critically.
He shared these insights during a recent interview with New Era.
Last week, Thomas garnered media attention when several of his learners received awards for their exceptional achievements in mathematics and physical science for the NSSCO examinations for 2024.
“The Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture’s acknowledgment of our learners’ performances is a testament to our hard work and dedication to delivering quality education. In addition, I have been involved in extracurricular activities that have positively impacted students’ overall development. I am proud of the consistent academic achievements of my students, particularly in mathematics. I also take pride in mentoring and guiding students beyond academics, helping them develop essential life skills and exploring their interests.
These experiences have been incredibly rewarding,” he said.
“I have a strong passion for education, and a commitment to nurturing students’ academic growth and critical thinking skills,” he said.
As a secondary school teacher, his primary responsibility is to teach mathematics and physical science, and ensure that learners gain a solid understanding of these critical subjects.
“My daily responsibilities include lesson planning, classroom instruction, assessing students’ progress, and providing individual guidance to help students achieve their full potential,” he said.
Public service
Thomas indicated that he commenced his career in public service in 2019. Prior to this, he was engaged in the electronics industry, a field which he believes provided him with robust organisational and problem-solving abilities.
“These skills allow me to approach educational challenges with creativity and efficiency, ultimately benefiting both students and the education sector as a whole,” he noted.
He further said the “entrepreneurial background has instilled in me a strong work ethic, a focus on results, and the ability to adapt to challenges. These skills are invaluable in the dynamic environment of education, where I can effectively address the diverse needs of students, and contribute to the overall improvement of the education system.”
Thomas explained his choice to pursue a career in civil service by stating, “My commitment to public service stems from a deep-seated passion for education, and a strong desire to aid in the academic and personal growth of youth.
Although my original career trajectory was in the business sector, I have consistently felt a compelling inclination towards the field of education. I am convinced that education possesses the transformative power to change lives and foster societal advancement.
Engaging in public service enables me to realise this passion, and significantly impacts the lives of young individuals.”
He continued that working within the government offers him a platform to contribute to national development through educational initiatives.
“I also appreciate the stability and opportunities for professional growth that come with public service.
I also value stability, and the chance to engage in professional development opportunities that enhance my teaching skills and contribute to my personal growth,” said the educator.
In response to enquiries regarding the difficulties associated with his profession, he highlighted the challenge of catering to the varied learning requirements of the leaners, and ensuring that each individual receives the necessary support to thrive. Additionally, he noted that managing large class sizes and maintaining learners’ engagement can also prove to be quite demanding.
“One of the most challenging aspects of my role is ensuring that all students, with their diverse learning styles and backgrounds, receive the support and attention they need to succeed. Maintaining a dynamic and engaging learning environment for all students can also be a constant endeavour,” Thomas stated.
“The most rewarding aspect of my work is witnessing the ‘aha!’ moments when students grasp a complex concept. Seeing their academic growth and knowing that I have played a role in their intellectual development is incredibly fulfilling,” he said.
Misconceptions
In response to views about the prevailing public perception that civil servants exhibit a negative attitude towards effective service delivery, Thomas dismissed it as unfounded and unjust.
“I do not agree with this sentiment. Public servants work diligently under challenging conditions to provide essential services.
In the education sector, teachers are committed to shaping future generations, despite facing resource constraints.
Hence, I strongly disagree with this generalisation,” he maintained.
He said public servants, including teachers, indeed work tirelessly under challenging circumstances to provide essential services to the public.
“We are dedicated to our roles and strive to make a positive impact within the limitations of our resources”.
