The annual Language Competition of the Goethe-Institut Namibia took place at Concordia College recently.
In partnership with the German-Namibian Society (DNG), 39 learners from 21 public and PASCH schools across the country came together to showcase their German language skills.
The competition is aimed at Grade 10 and Grade 11 learners who study German as a foreign language.
Once again, attractive prizes were awarded, including headsets and laptops, as well as the main prizes: two three-week trips to Germany with accommodation in German host families, sponsored and organised by the German-Namibian Society.
The main organiser of the Language Competition was Ingrid Barth, the coordinator for educational cooperation in German at the Goethe-Institut Namibia.
For her, the day was a great success: “Learning German opens up numerous national and international educational pathways for Namibian learners – from vocational training to university studies in Germany”. This year, the trips were awarded to Elzeth Roelf from Namib High School, Swakopmund and Angelina Shivute from Delta Secondary School, Windhoek, who impressed the jury the most with their command of the German language.
In addition, Innocentia Jacobs from the Deutsche Höhere Privatschule and André Hurter from Windhoek Gymnasium were delighted to receive brand-new laptops.
Franklin Oliver from Delta Secondary School, Windhoek, and Chloë Reeze from Namib High School, Swakopmund, were awarded headsets for their achievements.
The Language Competition has been held in Namibia for nearly 40 years.
Its aim is to promote the learning and continued use of the German language through German as a foreign language (DaF).
Edith Döbbert, board member of the German-Namibian Society, also expressed her satisfaction after the event.
“We are very pleased that so many young Namibians once again took part in the competition. This is a strong indication that the German language remains an important part of Namibia’s linguistic diversity. It also shows that young people see German as an opportunity for their professional future in Namibia and possibly in Germany,” she said.
