‘Liver Girl’ Still in Need of Help

Home Archived ‘Liver Girl’ Still in Need of Help

By Frederick Philander WINDHOEK The 18-month-old Khomasdal girl, who was born with a liver defect, will once again be taken to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town within the next two weeks in the hope of getting a suitable donor. This was said yesterday by the grandfather of little Simone Lawrence, Whani Jansen, a well-known Namibian musician. “We are confident that this time around our only grandchild will get a suitable donor, something we have been waiting and praying for, for quite some time now,” said Whani. Thus far, the family has received donations and contributions from the Namibian public to the tune of N$134ÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ 000 for the delicate transplant operation the child needs to undergo. “Because of the high medical costs and the special milk our grandchild has to receive on a monthly and daily basis, we have been forced to use some of the funds we have received from the public,” said Grandma Maggie. Simone needs to be medically examined in Cape Town and formally listed for a liver donor. “Our grandchild periodically suffers from infection, which has to be taken care of at high cost by a local pediatrician at Medi-Clinic. However, Simone’s life can only be saved by a liver transplant to be done in South Africa,” a concerned Whani said. In a letter to the grandparents, Dr Zakiyya Omarjee confirmed that Simone needs an urgent liver transplant. “She is currently stable, but requires a large number of medication to maintain her liver functions. She will continue to require liver function tests until all risks of infection are eliminated, at which time she will be reassessed for a liver transplantation in South Africa,” the doctor said. Grandma Maggie formally thanked the public for the generous financial support so far extended to the struggling family and expressed the hope that more support will be forthcoming. “I am planning a formal dance again to try and raise funding towards the main trust fund in the near future,” said musician Whani, who also requested the Namibian public to make contributions to the Simone trust account. The Simone Lawrence Trust Bank Account is: NDP-3000406592, Bank Windhoek.
