Home Crime and Courts Man arrested for beating Suiderhof woman

Windhoek

A Windhoek man returned home drunk and manhandled his girlfriend by hitting her on the head several times in Suiderhof on Wednesday morning.

City Police community and public relations superintendent Hileni Wilhelm said a case of domestic violence has been opened against Marco Bergman, who has since been arrested.

In an unrelated matter, two French nationals were robbed of items valued at N$20 000 last week. “The two French nationals were robbed after they asked for directions from two male suspects, who were driving a white Golf with no registration numberplate. No firearm was used, but the suspects got away with two bags with passports and items valued at N$20 000,” said Wilhelm, adding that no one has been arrested in connection with the crime, although a case of theft has been opened.

In a similar incident, Gabriel Kakonda was arrested after grabbing a cellphone worth N$11 000 from a driver at a traffic light while the driver was waiting for the lights to change at the intersection of Claudius Kandovazu and Caeser streets.

“One suspect distracted the driver from the left side and Kakonda grabbed the cellphone from the driver while the window was rolled down. The victim chased after the suspect and managed to recover the phone though,” she said.
Wilhelm also expressed concern over the number of robberies reported last week and warned against displaying large amounts of money in public.

She said several of the individuals robbed were targeted while in isolated areas.
“A word of caution goes out to the public to carry with them only enough money [to do their business],” she advised.
Wilhelm said a taxi driver was also held at gunpoint by one of the two passengers he picked up in Katutura’s Wambo Location. The driver accelerated, causing the vehicle to land in a riverbed. The two armed suspects then fled the scene and no injury was recorded.

The vehicle was slightly damaged and the driver was advised to go for a check-up at the hospital. He was also advised to open a case of attempted hijacking.
