Man falls to his death at construction site

WALVIS BAY – A worker of Nghede Construction plunged to death on Saturday after a cage he was using to clean rails at a construction site in Karibib detached, causing him to fall several metres to the ground. The deceased was identified as Walter Shiweda (31).

According to the police crime report for the weekend, Shiweda was employed as a general worker and was not wearing safety gear.

The incident report states that the deceased and his colleague went up in the cage that was attached to a caterpillar machine inside the factory to clean the rails.

Police say the two workers had their safety belts fastened to the cage.  However, while on top, the deceased allegedly got out of the cage to clean the rails.

He allegedly lost balance after one of his feet slipped, causing the cage to detach from the crane. The deceased however fell directly to the ground and sustained serious head injuries and was taken to the Karibib clinic for treatment.

He was then referred to the Usakos state hospital where he died several hours later. The incident is currently being investigated by the police.
