Namibian long-distance runner Jesaya Matheus put on a stellar performance yesterday, to secure a bronze medal in the 21-kilometre Sir Seretse Khama Day half marathon held in Serowe, Botswana.
Matheus crossed the finish line in a commendable time of 1 hour, 6 minutes, and 35 seconds, earning third place in a highly competitive race. The event was dominated by Zimbabwean athletes, with Tatenda Hove clinching the gold medal in 1:04:14, followed closely by Ebel Chibanda, who clocked 1:04:35 to take the silver.
The Sir Seretse Khama Day half marathon is held annually in honour of Botswana’s founding president and serves as a major sporting attraction in the region, drawing elite runners from across Southern Africa. The event not only commemorates a national hero but also fosters regional unity through athletics.
Speaking after the race, Matheus expressed gratitude to those who have supported him on his journey. “All I can say is thank you to my coach Robert Kaxuxwena. He always pushes me to do my best. I also want to thank the queen of marathon, Helalia Johannes — she is always advising me, and I truly appreciate her mentorship,” he said.
Matheus also acknowledged the Namibia Correctional Services for granting him time off to train, noting that their support has been instrumental in his growth. “I don’t want to forget my training partners either — I really respect them for helping me prepare for races like this.”
He further highlighted the need for more sponsorship and support for athletes, especially those competing internationally. “These achievements are not easy without sponsorship. Athletes need backing to cover travel, gear, nutrition, and race preparation. Without that, it becomes difficult to compete at a high level,” he added.
Matheus’s recent performances speak volumes about his consistency and commitment. In addition to his bronze in Serowe, he has earned multiple podium finishes this year, including victories and top-three placements in the National Rössing Uranium Marathon, the BTC Half Marathon, and the Gaborone Half Marathon. He also secured second place at the Vivo Energy Marathon, further cementing his reputation as one of Namibia’s top distance runners. -lmupetami@nepc.com.na
