Bank Windhoek recently announced the completion of training for the third cohort of its Mathematics Teachers Initiative for Grades 8 and 9, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing commitment to improving education in Namibia. With this latest cohort, the initiative has now trained nearly 500 mathematics teachers nationwide since 2024.
Launched to address challenges in mathematics performance at the junior secondary level, the initiative focuses on equipping teachers with enhanced subject knowledge, modern teaching methodologies, and practical classroom strategies. By strengthening teaching capacity, the programme aims to improve learner outcomes and foster a deeper understanding of mathematics among students.
The initiative’s impact is already evident. According to the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture’s Director of Programmes and Quality Assurance, Ayesha Wentworth, there has been a measurable improvement in mathematics performance, with a 5% increase in the pass rate over the past year.
“This progress signals that targeted investment in teacher development can yield meaningful and sustainable results in the education sector,” she said.
She commended Bank Windhoek for its continued dedication to education, noting that the initiative is “bearing fruit” and making a tangible difference in classrooms across the country. The Ministry further encouraged the Bank to sustain and expand its investment, emphasising the critical role of public-private partnerships in advancing national education goals.
Bank Windhoek’s Head of Strategic Partnerships and Corporate Social Responsibility, Bronwyn Moody, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to empowering educators and supporting the development of Namibia’s future workforce. “Education remains a cornerstone of national development. By investing in teachers, we are investing in generations of learners who will shape the future of our country,” she said, encouraging the teachers to continue educating the nation.
Moody concluded that as the initiative continues to grow, Bank Windhoek remains focused on scaling its impact, strengthening collaborations, and contributing to improved academic outcomes across Namibia.
