MC Tjombe urges fans to turn up for Winter Cup

Popular master of ceremonies and horse racing commentator, Dico Tjombe, is rallying fans to come out in large numbers for the highly anticipated MTC-sponsored Winter Cup, set to take place tomorrow at the Rehoboth Horse Racing Track.

Tjombe, a vibrant figure known for his energy and multilingual commentary, plays a key role in keeping crowds entertained and informed during local racing events. He is the voice behind the microphone, announcing the starting line-ups and winners, bringing excitement and flair to every race.

Speaking ahead of the event, Tjombe shared his journey into the world of horse racing. “I started MCing in 2015. My late uncle introduced me to it. He basically just told me to announce the names of horses as the race starts, but I added my own style and flair,” he said with a smile.

Tjombe isn’t just any MC—he’s a multilingual marvel. He effortlessly commentates in English, Otjiherero, Damara/Nama, Setswana, and Kalahari, occasionally adding a touch of Oshiwambo to his calls. “I picked up these languages by socialising with different people from various cultural backgrounds. It makes the experience more inclusive and exciting for fans from all walks of life,” he explained.

Despite not owning a racehorse himself, due to the high cost of maintenance, Tjombe remains deeply passionate about the sport. “I love horse racing. Even if I never own a horse, I’ll always be part of this world. I’ll continue to MC and commentate for as long as I can,” he declared.

With a total prize purse of N$250 000 up for grabs, divided across different race categories, the MTC Winter Cup promises to be a thrilling spectacle for horseracing fans. Organised by the Namibia Horse Racing Association, the event is expected to draw top-tier talent and enthusiastic crowds.

“This is going to be a big one. I am really urging people to come out in numbers to support the sport and witness the action.”

Gates open early, and the races are expected to attract both seasoned punters and first-time spectators.
