A heated clash erupted between Namibian rapper Mega Slaughterhouse and South African amapiano artist Meneer Cee over the remix of the former’s song, ‘Pikkewyne.’
The controversy has sparked strong reactions from Namibian fans, who are rallying behind Slaughterhouse.
The conflict was sparked by Mega’s discovery that Meneer Cee had released his (Mega’s) song on his (Meneer’s) social streaming platform. Slaughterhouse expressed frustration and disappointment, stating that the South African artist had ignored his repeated attempts to contact him regarding the remix.
Slaughterhouse last week said he got tired of sending messages to the South African musician and his manager with no response.
“My manager sent the files to them, and when I saw they had made a remix without my permission to release it, I flipped. At first, I didn’t care about it, but these people are making money from my music. At first, I asked them to at least correct the way my name is written, but no one did anything about it,” he said.
The Namibian rapper said he wants recognition for his hard work.
“I was just being told to get my passport ready. I am happy that my Namibian people are behind me, fighting this battle with me; I have never felt so supported. Meneer Cee has not released a hit track in a long time and now wants to use my song for his own elevation,” he said.
Namibians have voiced support for Mega Slaughterhouse, with many expressing outrage at Meneer Cee’s actions. Some have even called for a ban on Meneer Cee’s future performances in Namibia. The artist toured the country in May and has gained a following among Namibian music enthusiasts.
In an interview, Meneer Cee acknowledged that the original song belonged to Mega Slaughterhouse but defended his decision to promote it. He explained that the collaboration came about when he was booked for a performance in Namibia and wanted to connect with local artists. Meneer Cee said he had obtained the song from a local producer and created the remix.
“It took us six months for the remix to be in the limelight, but the funny thing is he does not perform it wherever he goes or promote it,” he said.
The South African artist denied Mega’s allegations of posting the remix on his streaming platforms and said he was unaware of who had uploaded the song. He attributed the growing popularity of the remix to his own promotional efforts and expressed disappointment with Mega’s lack of support.
“I stopped answering his calls and text messages because I reached breaking point because he was not doing anything and he was not even promoting the remix the way I was doing. The breaking point for me was when he posted the one million views and there was no credit; he even failed to thank me,” he said.
Meneer Cee attributed the growing popularity of the remix to his own promotional efforts and expressed disappointment with Mega’s lack of support.
He however apologised to his fans in Namibia and assured Mega that this issue will be resolved.
