A quarter of a century after it first rewrote Mitsubishi’s SUV playbook, the Mitsubishi Outlander is marking its 25th anniversary with an ultra-exclusive model that blends heritage, technology and off-road credibility in equal measure.
Enter the Outlander Edition 25, a sharply specified, collector-focused derivative of which only 10 units will be made available in southern Africa.
In a market awash with limited badges and cosmetic upgrades, Mitsubishi Motors is positioning this one as the real deal, namely a celebration of a nameplate that has quietly become one of the brand’s global heavyweights. Originally launched in 2001 under the Airtrek nameplate, the Outlander was among the early wave of “real” SUVs that successfully fused passenger-car comfort with authentic all-wheel-drive capability and seven-seat practicality.
Over the years, it has carved out a loyal following among families and adventure-seekers who demand versatility without sacrificing refinement. Now, Edition 25 arrives as a rolling tribute to that legacy, and it does not hold back.
Unique design
Visually, the Edition 25 leans into the current generation’s bold I-Fu-Do-Do design philosophy, a Japanese expression that translates to “authentic and majestic”.
The Dynamic Shield front grille gains smoother, more intricate detailing, while the lower skid guard adopts a more sculpted, three-dimensional treatment that reinforces the Outlander’s rugged undertones.
At the rear, smoked tail lamp lenses sharpen the T-shaped lighting signature, and a redesigned rear skid plate adds visual depth and muscle. Black-finished lower bumpers and B- and C-pillar garnishes strike a balance between durability and premium appeal.
A panoramic power sliding sunroof enhances the sense of space, while unique 20-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels ensure the Edition 25 is instantly recognisable.
It is subtle, but it is purposeful, and in a 10-unit run, exclusivity is guaranteed.
Pricing and positioning
Interestingly, Edition 25 is priced at N$819 995, which is identical to the Outlander Exceed’s range-topping price.
The broader line-up spans from the GLS at N$759 995 through to the Exceed at N$819 995, positioning the Edition 25 as a value-rich flagship rather than a price-hiked commemorative special. With only 10 units allocated, Mitsubishi is not chasing volume.
It is targeting brand loyalists and collectors who appreciate the Outlander’s 25-year journey from early crossover pioneer to digitally enhanced, adventure-ready SUV.
In a fiercely contested segment, the Outlander Edition 25 does not just celebrate history – it reinforces Mitsubishi’s intent to remain relevant, refined and rugged for the next generation of explorers.
Fully digital
Inside, Mitsubishi has doubled down on comfort and technology.
LED lighting now features throughout the cabin, complete with capacitive touch switches and a soft fade-in/fade-out effect that adds a premium ambience.
Leather seats, an eight-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support and memory function, plus three-level seat ventilation raise the comfort stakes considerably. Rear passengers benefit from pull-up sunshades, reinforcing the Outlander’s family-friendly DNA.
The technological centrepiece is a 12.3-inch Smartphone-link Display Audio system supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, paired with built-in navigation.
Voice functionality is activated via the command “Hello Mitsubishi”, allowing drivers to adjust settings hands-free.
Complementing this is a 12.3-inch fully digital driver display, transforming the cockpit into a thoroughly modern command centre. The Dynamic Sound Yamaha Premium system with eight speakers promises concert-like acoustics, underlining the Edition 25’s upmarket positioning.
Practical improvements have not been ignored either. The centre console has been redesigned, with a less obtrusive cupholder layout and an enlarged 4.2-litre storage box.
USB ports are now Type-C for faster charging, and the wireless charging pad has been repositioned for easier access.
A frameless rearview mirror doubles as a display for the rear camera, while a Multi Around Monitor and hands-free power tailgate elevate everyday usability.
Confident control
Under the bonnet, Mitsubishi has wisely stuck with a proven formula.
The 2.5-litre DOHC direct-injection four-cylinder engine delivers 135kW at 6 000rpm and 245Nm at 3 600rpm, paired to an eight-speed CVT. Fuel consumption is rated at a competitive 8.1 litres per 100km – respectable for a seven-seat SUV with genuine all-wheel-drive hardware.
That hardware comes in the form of Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system, an electronically managed AWD setup that continuously optimises torque distribution between all four wheels.
Combined with 210mm of ground clearance, it ensures the Edition 25 remains true to the brand’s off-road pedigree.
Six drive modes – Normal, Eco, Tarmac, Gravel, Snow and Mud – allow the system to integrate seamlessly with the powertrain, electric power steering and braking system to deliver composed performance across changing terrain.
In an era where many SUVs are urban soft roaders, the Outlander continues to offer credible all-surface ability.
