Namibia is looking to deepen trade and attract investment from Russia, with the country’s top diplomat, Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, in Russia this week for a three-day official visit.
Ashipala-Musavyi is Namibia’s trade and international relations minister.
Her visit is aimed at boosting economic cooperation between the two countries.
This came to light after the ministry issued a statement yesterday, after the minister had already arrived in Russia.
The statement revealed that Ashipala-Musavyi has been invited by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, and her visits will include high-level meetings with Yuri Trutnev, deputy prime minister and co-chair of the Namibia-Russia Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation.
“The commission serves as a vital platform for reviewing existing joint projects and exploring new opportunities for industrial and economic growth.
“The minister will also have various business engagements to enhance investment and trade flows,” reads the statement.
The statement further reads. “The visit will continue with discussions between Ashipala-Musavyi and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, focusing on deepening diplomatic relations and trade, as well as exchanging views on matters of mutual interest within the international arena.”
The minister is also meeting Russian business leaders to discuss expanding trade links, attracting investment, and strengthening partnerships in key industries.
Talks with Lavrov are set to explore broader diplomatic cooperation and shared strategies on international matters.
Namibia and Russia share decades of diplomatic relations grounded in mutual respect and shared values.
Both governments are committed to expanding economic cooperation and ensuring existing projects continue to deliver benefits.
“This visit underscores the sound and historic relations between Namibia and the Russian Federation, which are built on a foundation of mutual respect and shared values,” reads the statement.
