Namibia to host Junior Africa Cup … Key qualifier tournament on home soil

Namibia to host Junior Africa Cup … Key qualifier tournament on home soil

Namibia will host the Junior Africa Cup (JAC), the crucial qualifying tournament for the Junior Hockey World Cup, it was announced on Wednesday.

The tournament is set to take place from 30 November to 8 December at the Outdoor field at Windhoek High School.

In preparation for the event, clubs have been invited to submit the names of players for trials to form a high-performance squad.

The competition is open to both boys and girls under the age of 21, providing a platform for young talent across the nation to showcase their skills.

The JAC will bring together the top junior hockey teams from across Africa, all vying for the title and for one of the three coveted spots in the Junior Hockey World Cup, which will be held in India later in December.

Tunomwaameni Epafras, the Communications Officer of the Namibia Hockey Union (NHU), described the event as a significant milestone for Namibian hockey. “This tournament highlights our commitment to developing and promoting the sport at all levels,” he said.

The NHU is calling on the Namibian public to support the junior national teams and create an energetic and encouraging environment for the tournament. “Your presence in the stands will inspire our players and contribute to a memorable experience for all,” said Epafras.

Additionally, the NHU is seeking support from corporate Namibia to ensure the successful hosting of the JAC. “Your support will be instrumental in making this tournament a success. By backing the JAC, you are investing in the future of Namibian hockey and aiding in the growth and development of the sport across the African continent,” Epafras added.

Namibia was initially scheduled to host the JAC in 2021, but the event was cancelled due to Covid-19. Last year, Egypt hosted the competition. Historically, countries like South Africa and Zimbabwe have participated in this prestigious tournament. -lmupetami@nepc.com.na
