Namibian boxers head to Angola for tournament

Namibia has sent a team of five male boxers to Angola to participate in an international boxing tournament.

The event is held as part of that country’s national Independence celebrations.

The tournament, which runs from 21 to 25 May, features both male and female competitors from eight countries.

Boxers from Angola, Congo Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Namibia, Portugal, South Africa and Zimbabwe will go head-to-head in various weight divisions.

Namibia will be represented by Festus Ishongwa (71kg), Joshua Amoni (75kg), Peter Kotze (80kg), Gebhard Ipinge (86kg) and Israel Hamunyela (92kg).

The national team is accompanied by coach Titus Joseph, who expressed confidence in the squad. “The team is in good spirits and eager to perform well. We are looking forward to testing our skills against some of the region’s best,” said Joseph.

Boxer Ipinge added that he is fit and ready to step into the ring.

Carlos Luís Gonçalves, president of the Angola Boxing Federation, extended a warm welcome to all participating nations. “It is a great pleasure to host this tournament. My federation and the local organising committee are fully-committed to ensuring a successful and memorable event,” he said.
