Namibian Street Classic postponed

Namibian Street Classic postponed

The organisers of the inaugural Namibia Street Classic announced on Sunday that the highly anticipated event has been postponed following the withdrawal of several international athletes.

The street athletics classic is an innovative track-and-field format in which a temporary sprint track is constructed in an urban setting or stadium forecourt, bringing the sport closer to spectators.

The Namibia Street Classic, which sought to introduce this dynamic concept to local audiences while showcasing some of the country’s leading athletes, was scheduled to take place from 27 to 28 March at the Vegkop Stadium in Windhoek.

The event was set to bring world-class athletics to Namibian soil for the first time in this format.

The organisers expressed deep regret over the postponement, saying the decision has not been taken lightly.

“Our team has been fully prepared to host a world-class competition that would highlight elite athletics and deliver an unforgettable experience for both spectators and stakeholders. However, a significant number of withdrawals from international athletes has affected the overall quality of the event,” the statement read.

According to the organisers, the withdrawals are largely linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has caused travel disruptions and uncertainty, ultimately affecting athlete participation.

“As a result, we believe it would not be in the best interests of our sponsors, supporters, or the Namibian public to proceed with an event that does not meet the high standards we set ourselves,” the statement added.

The organisers emphasised their commitment to delivering an event defined by excellence, competitiveness and international appeal, noting that current circumstances make it impossible to fulfil that promise.

“We extend our sincere gratitude to our sponsors, partners, athletes, and the public for their understanding, continued support, and belief in the vision of the Namibia Street Classic. We remain committed to hosting the event at a later date, when it can truly realise its full potential,” the statement concluded.
