Nande shines, Corner Butcher elevates Gold Cup

Windhoek Golf Club was alive with competitive spirit and relief this past weekend as the prestigious Corner Butcher Gold Cup unfolded on 22 and 23 November 2025.

The annual tournament, one of Namibia’s premier amateur golf events, nearly faced disruption until The Corner Butcher stepped in at the eleventh hour to rescue and elevate it with generous sponsorship that players and organisers alike hailed as transformative.

Club officials expressed deep appreciation to the sponsor for ensuring the event not only proceeded but also improved in stature. According to players, the enhanced prize offerings and professionalism brought a refreshing boost to the tournament’s atmosphere.

Their involvement reaffirmed the significance of strong partnerships in sustaining flagship sporting events.

Sanctioned by the Namibia Amateur Golf Union (NAGU), the Gold Cup carried both national merit points and World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points, cementing its importance on the local golfing calendar.

A total of 58 golfers from across the country, including participants from Grootfontein, Omeya, Mariental, and Windhoek, competed across A, B, and C Divisions over 36 to 54 holes. In contrast, others battled it out in the Stableford format.

NAGU president Toady Gurirab commended Windhoek Golf Club for exceptional organisation and logistics, emphasising the tournament’s success despite earlier uncertainties.

The highlight of the weekend came from none other than Likius Nande, who delivered a commanding performance to clinch the Overall Gross title with a superb total score of 210.

His composed and consistent play placed him comfortably ahead of the field, earning him well-deserved praise as the 2025 Gold Cup Champion.

“I am really happy with my performance,” he said.

Other standout performances included:Overall Nett:Elias Mulombwelwa (215), Overall Runner-Up Gross: Edwin Kutara (231) and Overall Runner-Up Nett: Alfie Ndyenge (218).

Across the divisions, players such as Jackson Kawaya (A Division Gross), Laban Malule (B Division Gross), and Frans Katjimune (C Division Gross) showcased remarkable talent, reaffirming the depth of Namibia’s amateur golfing community.

The Stableford category produced equally impressive results, with Sesilia Nkosi securing first place with 78 points.

Windhoek Golf Club extended its gratitude not only to The Corner Butcher, but also to staff, greenkeepers, Pro Shop teams, and committee members for their combined efforts in ensuring a seamless event.

The club now looks ahead to its next major fixture, the Battle of the Social Groups Competition on 29 November.
