The regional councillor for the Khorixas constituency, Eddie Nanub, has outlined his plans to complete the upgrading of key water infrastructure, ensuring reliable access to clean water for his constituency and improving the quality of life in the Kunene region.
The constituency has been grappling with access to water due to lack of designated water points in rural areas and aging water infrastructure.
His tenure began last year, after he won the regional elections in November and was elected a member of the Kunene Regional Council.
Nanub, who also serves on the National Council, stated that water scarcity remains a major challenge in his constituency, which he plans to address through advocating for budget allocations, engaging relevant line ministries on the issue, and fostering partnerships with the private sector.
“The priorities are clear, water security, job creation, land for residential and agricultural purposes, improved service delivery and revitalisation of the local economic activity,” Nanub said.
He added that he believes in consultative and transparent leadership, by holding regular constituency meetings with the communities to make sure communication flows both ways.
“I believe in leading with integrity and ensuring that decisions are made collectively. With input from the community, traditional authorities, and other stakeholders. A leader must listen first and act decisively.”
Nanub further added that there is limited economic activity in Khorixas and that he aims to empower local communities to pursue business activities and self-employment.
“I intend to revitalise local economic activity while intending to empower communities to take ownership of local solutions,” said the politician.
He highlighted improving road infrastructure to connect remote areas to economic hubs will be essential. Citing the ongoing Khorixas-Kamanjab road project.
On youth unemployment, Nanub said that his office is collaborating with the Kunene regional council to implement government projects to support skills training and small business development.
“I am focused on establishing skills development and enterprise support programmes to tackle youth unemployment,” he said.
Nanub noted the complaints from the residents regarding slow service delivery and development in the constituency.
“I share the same sense of urgency; it does feel slow but we are steadily laying the foundation for sustainable development. I am committed to the implementation of projects and services that have lasting impact,” Nanub stated.
He said that he consistently liaises with the central government to ensure fair share of resource allocation for his constituency while improving and maintaining existing services.
He envisions a self-reliant Khorixas constituency, which he said would be a model for rural development in Namibia. “My vision is to see Khorixas constituency transformed to where economic opportunities are accessible, basic services are reliable and every resident feels included in the development journey,” Nanub remarked.
He called on residents of his constituency to play a part in the development of their community. “Government alone cannot achieve all that we desire. We need partnerships, participation and unity. Together we can build a Khorixas that we are all proud of,” said the lawmaker.
