Namibia’s renowned Paralympic swimmer Gideon ‘The Amphibian’ Nasilowski will be the country’s sole representative at the upcoming International Paralympics Committee (IPC) World Championship in Glasgow, Scotland, on July 12-20.
Newly elected secretary-General of the Namibia Paralympics Committee (NPC), Michael Hamukwaya, confirmed Nasilowski’s participation, saying it will be very vital for the swimmer to excel at the championship as it will serve as a qualifying competition to next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
“He has been preparing very well on his own and we expect him to do his best in Scotland. It will not be easy but if he happens to win something that side, he will automatically qualify for next year’s Olympic Games, which will be a very good achievement. He will be the only Namibian athlete among top-class athletes from about 206 countries,” said Hamukwaya.
Hamukwaya, however, indicated that should Nasilowski not manage to qualify at the Glasgow championship, he would still have an opportunity to do that next year, as there will be other qualification events as lined up leading to the Olympic Games.
