Netball needs major shakedown – Goagoses-Nekundi

… lack of funding a big constraint

WINDHOEK – Following Namibia’s senior netball team, the Desert Jewels’ uninspiring performance at the recent African World Cup qualifiers in Botswana where they finished bottom of the six-nation roost, Team Manager Rebekka Goagoses-Nekundi says it’s high time Namibia revisits the drawing board.

Speaking to New Era Sport yesterday, Goagoses-Nekundi admitted that if Namibian netball is to regain its lost fortunes, a new approach in terms of preparations and availing more game time will be needed going into the future.

“To start off, we need to change the way we do things, especially our preparations when going to bigger tournaments. Another problem we have is the constant lack of game time or lack of friendly matches and until we sort things out in those two areas, we will remain lacking at international competitions,” said Goagoses-Nekundi.

She also highlighted the constant lack of funding, saying inadequate cash has been hampering progress for the past few years.

“The lack of funding has really been the main area of concern for us – we cannot even organise friendly matches against nearby countries like Botswana, Zambia or even South Africa. We cannot properly prepare our players whenever we have big competitions coming and our performance in Botswana was testimony to all these problems I’m mentioning,” she said.
