The Khomas Netball League opens its 2008 season with a tournament for all its affiliates in various divisions this weekend – starting tomorrow under floodlights at the modernized Khomasdal field netball courts.

According to the liaison officer of the Khomas Netball League Viviane Katjiuongua, the primary purpose of the two-day tournament is to select a Khomas invitational team and an additional Under-21 side to represent the Khomas Netball League at the Southern Regional Tournament in Stellenbosch, South Africa, which gets under way on the 6th of June this year.

Pressed to shed some light on Namibia’s seemingly unending inactivity in international competitions – the articulate former national team player rather responded in a more philosophical fashion.

“Obviously, we are very worried about the current situation in which domestic netball is finding herself entangled , but that’s not our territory because there is a hierarchy and international participation is solely the beat of the All Namibia Netball Association (ANNA).”

Katjiuongua said the Khomas Netball League, as main supplier of players to the national team, has to overcome several obstacles in order to restore this once flourishing discipline back to her former glory days.

“It’s not that we have been sitting arms folded about the sorry state of affairs in our game. We have to follow procedures and we did exactly that through airing our grievances with the National Sports Commission, and I’m sure something is being done about it, but like I’ve said earlier – the mother body needs to get her house in order as a matter of urgency because we want to get back into the international fold.”
