WINDHOEK – Namibia’s popular event website www.whatsonwindhoek.com has undergone an extensive facelift and expansion under its new owner Delia Magg-Thesenvitz.
The new website was officially launched at The Warehouse Theatre last Tuesday. The new site, which is also accessible at www.whatsonnamibia.com, is a platform for local initiatives to promote their events and free time facilities. But it can only work if the community makes use of the service. About 80 invited key stakeholders of the Namibian sport, culture, entertainment and tourism industries, as well as big sponsors, were invited for a presentation of the new website.
In order to showcase the variety of things in Windhoek, Magg-Thesenvitz and her team also organised a big event for the public to experience eight Namibian acts which were: the Polytechnic Debating Society, rock band Safe19, the Basketball Artists School, Parkour athlete Adam from PK NAM, poet Blessing Mbonambi, a delegation of Namibia’s best table tennis players, Equipped Dance Academy and the Throne Room Drumming School. The audience could join the action to win vouchers for a free time activity sponsored by local companies. Singer Lize Ehlers and poet Slick the Dick was trying to dribble like the kids from the Basketball Artists School; model Mercedez von Cloete was showing off her drumming skills. After the match by the professionals, two volunteers entertained the audience with their own table tennis performance, and four more prizes were given away to the people who recognized places in Windhoek on photos showing just a little detail of the place. The MC of the night was poet Nunu Namises.
With the new WhatsON website, Magg-Thesenvitz and her team have created a platform not only for the people in Namibia but also for people visiting our country. Besides the safari tourist, there are numerous people coming for business, conferences and sport events like the upcoming Junior Squash World Championships. These people want to know what they can do while in Windhoek and the new WhatsON website can give them guidance by marketing local initiatives to them. The new website does not only cater for events but also for permanent facilities like sport clubs, museums, recreation areas, playgrounds, sundowner spots, etc. to be listed. “We would like to have all kinds of free time activities listed so that everybody can find something for him- or herself.”
For WhatsOn to be that information point, event organisers and facility operators are requested to enter their events and activities directly on the website. “WhatsOn is a crowd sourcing initiative; I need the community to submit their information to us”, Magg-Thesenvitz emphasises. To list an event or facility one can just go to the website and click “Submit new event”. Unlike Facebook where information is immediately visible the information submitted to WhatsOn has to be published by the WhatsOn team to appear on the website. Listing events stays free of charge; other services like the listing of dining out specials or banner advertising are subject to charges.
As the new website also wants to list happenings outside of Windhoek, it is also accessible at www.whatsonnamibia.com. Further new features are filter and sorting functions, the integration with the Facebook page, the responsive design, and that people can save a date directly to their Outlook calendar. The total entrance receipts of the evening will be donated to the Basketball Artists School. The launch event was supported by the Warehouse Theatre, the City of Windhoek, 99 FM, as well as the House of Wines. Prizes were sponsored by the Action Arena, Go Karting Entertainment, Speedminton Namibian, Archer’s Land, the Goethe Centre, and the Franco Namibian Cultural Centre, Hotel Thule, and Kupferquelle Resort.
