Windhoek

The Namibia Football Association (NFA) has struck a lucrative deal with Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL), that will see the birth of the Tafel Lager Cup that will strictly be contested between four northern regions: Omusati, Ohangwena, Oshana and Oshikoto.

The competition will officially be launched at Club Destiny in Ongwediva tomorrow, the NFA has confirmed. An ecstatic NFA secretary general Barry Rukoro said, “This is the first edition of the Tafel Lager Cup, which we envisage as another huge step towards the development of football in the country and also a way of taking the people’s game to the people”

“We’re indeed very pleased that the relationship between Tafel Lager and NFA continues to grow stronger and stronger over the years. We call upon the football family in Namibia, particularly in the northern community, to really get behind the competition and support it to the maximum,” said Rukoro.

The competition is scheduled to start in Oshakati on the weekend of December 5 and 6 and conclude on the weekend of December 12 and 13.

The first round of the competition will include regional first and second division clubs eligible to play; then the four regional winners will qualify for the final phase of the competition in Oshakati.

“The teams will win lucrative prize-money, trophies and medals, while the four regional winners will be clad in branded gear”, explains Rukoro.

Between 2006 and 2008, also under the sponsorship of NBL, the Hansa Pilsener Cup was contested by first and second division clubs, involving over 200 clubs with 600 players and 1 800 volunteers.
The overall winners back then took home N$90 000 and the runners-up got N$40 000.
