The Namibia National Olympic Committee and Commonwealth Games Association (NNOC-CGA) has announced the establishment of its Medical Commission, marking a significant step toward strengthening the country’s athlete health, welfare, and performance systems.
The commission, endorsed by the NNOC-CGA Executive Board on 16 March 2026, will serve through to 31 December 2028, aligning with the current Olympic cycle.
Four professionals have been appointed as inaugural members, bringing expertise across medical, psychological and anti-doping fields.
The commission will be led by NNOC-CGA Vice President Gaby Ahrens, while the other members include Jurgen Hoffmann, Ruan Mocke, David Weber and Victoria Katukula.
The formation of the commission signals a strategic move to enhance governance and ensure that athlete care remains aligned with international standards set by bodies such as the International Olympic Committee.
The Medical Commission will function primarily as an advisory body to the NNOC-CGA Executive Board, providing independent, expert guidance on athletes’ health, welfare, and medical matters.
Its responsibilities include advising on the interpretation and implementation of international medical policies and ensuring that Namibia’s Olympic structures remain aligned with global best practices.
The commission will also contribute to strengthening governance, improving athlete safeguarding and supporting ethical, high-performance sport systems.
NNOC-CGA president Ndeulipula Hamutumwa welcomed the commission’s establishment, highlighting its importance in advancing athlete support systems.
“The establishment of the Medical Commission marks a significant milestone in strengthening our athlete support systems. The calibre and diversity of expertise within this Commission reflect a deliberate and strategic approach to athlete welfare, medical governance, and performance support.” Hamutumwa said.
He further stated that the NNOC is confident that the team will enhance the standard of care and ensure that our athletes are supported in a holistic, safe and high-performance environment as they prepare for international competition.
The NNOC-CGA, as the body responsible for the Olympic and Commonwealth Games movement in Namibia, continues to prioritise athlete protection and the promotion of sport nationwide.
The establishment of the Medical Commission reinforces its commitment to building a safe, ethical, and high-performance sporting environment, ensuring that Namibian athletes are well supported on their journey to international competition.
