NUNW plans to build new headquarters

Home National NUNW plans to build new headquarters

Windhoek

Plans are underway to build new state-of-the art headquarters for the National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) in Katutura at the cost of some N$243 million.

The proposed nine-storey building is expected to replace the existing NUNW offices and once complete would be the largest building in Katutura, Labour Investment Holdings (LIH) chief executive officer, Fillemon Iyambo said on Saturday.

LIH is the financial investment arm of the NUNW and also handed over a cheque of N$1 million dividends to the NUNW in. Iyambo called on union leaders to put the money to good use. “We don’t want to hear that Mr H bought a Land Rover with this money,” he stressed.

Iyambo also urged union affiliates to pay their membership fees to the NUNW. “There is no need to call yourself an NUNW affiliate if your affiliation fees are not paid,” Iyambo said.

He further called on the new NUNW leadership to adopt effective, strong and collective leadership styles and to ensure strong collaboration at all levels.

Iyambo said the new building would comprise a hotel, a conference centre to house 800 delegates, and offices that can be rented out, among other features. “This new building will be turned into a commercial centre and will be self-sufficient,” he explained.

Iyambo said the LIH would continue to protect the interests of Namibian workers by addressing mainstream economic development.

“We continuously assess, where appropriate, engage in new investments, acquisitions, partnerships and explore joint venture opportunities

“LIH will remain at the forefront of simultaneously ensuring that we address past inequalities and current unemployment, promote job creation and broad-based skills development,” he said.

“It is only through good leadership can we achieve our dreams, “he said.
