Okahandja gears up for new season

Okahandja Football Club will play a pre-season friendly against the national U/20 girls on Saturday as they prepare for the upcoming FNB Women’s Super League.

Although the Namibia Football Association (NFA) has not issued any official statement on the start of the season, the Okahandja-based team’s director of operations, Johannes Jakobus, believes they must stay prepared at all times.

“This match is very important for both teams, as the men’s senior team is also preparing for their third-division league campaign, while the girls’ team is getting ready for the new season. They will play the national U/20 girls’ team at Okahandja’s Nau-Aib Stadium,” he said.

He added: “We have not seen any official communiqué from the NFA on when the women’s league is starting, but as a club, we have to stay prepared through training and staying fit, because with the NFA, you never know when they will say the league should start.”

Okahandja’s last season was anything but rosy, as they finished at the bottom of the table. However, the operations manager said they are aiming for a much stronger campaign this year, with a top-three finish in mind.

“So much happened last season, we had inexperienced and young players, which cost us many games. This coming season, we hope to change our position on the table and improve our overall performance,” he said.

Despite last season’s challenges, the coach remains hopeful about the team’s potential.

“I believe we have a good team, and if we take care of them and groom them like we are doing, we will be a force to reckon with in the FNB Women’s Super League this year,” he explained.

Beauties are the defending champions of the FNB Women Super League after finishing top at the end of the season. Beauties recently participated in CAF Cosafa qualifiers where their journey was cut short, exiting in the group stages.
