Okahandja
The mayor of Okahandja, Johannes Congo Hindjou, has cautioned drivers to observe road regulations as a measure to reduce the high number of accidents on the country’s roads.
Speaking about the recent tragic accident on the B1 road that resulted in the death of three young people, he said the accident sent chills down the spines of residents and that he was personally touched by the incident.
“Drivers must be cautious and stick to the rules of the road because speed kills.
“I was hurt by that accident … for three lives to be lost just like that is devastating,” said Hindjou.
Three young men died when the vehicle they were travelling in crashed into a moving truck which was transporting cattle. The accident, Hindjou said, should serve as a wake-up call to the Roads Authority (RA) to come up with measures to regulate the speed of drivers on the highway.
“It’s high time the Roads Authority brings in measures on the highway such as speed humps and boards that say that it is a high-risk accident area. We are not safe,” Hindjou told New Era.
Furthermore, the mayor spoke of some developmental projects in the pipeline, saying he would work closely with the community and stakeholders to ensure that the troubles at the garden town are resolved.
Among others, Hindjou also commented on the land dealings at the town, in reference to the order by the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Sophia Shaningwa, that land not be sold at the town pending an investigation into shoddy land dealings.
“We are not allowed to sell land anymore. This has brought problems as money comes from land. We hope the investigation from the ministry will be done soon,” said Hindjou.
