The police in Okahao are appealing to the community to collect the bodies of family members from the mortuary for burial due to a lack of space.
Police spokesperson in the Omusati region, Anna Kunga told New Era that the Okahao police mortuary has been full recently because families are not collecting the bodies on time.
She said the mortuary gets full, often because many families may be too slow, in making funeral arrangements for their deceased beloveds.
“Some of the bodies taking up space in the mortuary are those of foreigners, especially our Angolan neighbours, since we are close to the borders. For instance, if a foreigner commits suicide here, it will take some time to get to their families for them to collect the body,” Kunga said.
Asked where the new bodies are being kept now since the mortuary is full, she said there is no other mortuary available, so the bodies are stuffed together, a situation she said is not appropriate.
“There is no space for new bodies; thus, they are just placed together, congested, which is not good at all. We, therefore, urge all families who have their deceased beloveds at Okahao police mortuary to make timely arrangements,” she said.
