Hofni Hangula from Onawa Secondary School in the Omusati region was on Tuesday crowned the top-performing learner at the 2024 NSSCO and AS levels’ examinations.
Among a competitive pool of 40 757 candidates, his exceptional academic performance earned him the title of best performer. Onawa ranks number two among the top- performing public schools. “Close all doors of negativity, and try your best because you never know what you can achieve,” were the words which resonated deeply with Hangula throughout his studies. He expressed surprise at his outstanding national ranking, and attributed his success to the unwavering drive and dedication of his peers.
“I was truly motivated by the hard work of my classmates. Their commitment inspired me to strive for excellence, and not be left behind,” he noted. Hangula acknowledged the challenges he faced during his academic journey, highlighting the difficulties in acquiring essential learning materials.
“Hustling for previous question papers and stationery was a real struggle. I was trying my best,” he admitted.
Jolisa Garises, a learner at Rukonga Vision School, attained the first position at the NSSCO level. She told her peers that they can achieve anything they put their minds to. “An achievement like this takes time and effort; it requires dedication and commitment. There will be times when you feel discouraged, but if I could achieve first place, anyone can also achieve it,” she beamed. She added that the pressure at school fuelled her to work hard because the school is known for being the top-performing institution countrywide, and they wanted to maintain that reputation.
Brian Mattys, Garises’ father, said he is very proud of his daughter, who has always performed well throughout her academic journey.
“This didn’t come as a surprise because she has always outdone herself. To all the pupils who have done well and those who didn’t, this is a learning journey; do not feel discouraged,” he observed.
