Civics, Gunners in MTC NFA Cup final

Civics and Mighty Gunners will square off in the final of the MTC NFA Cup Aweh in Swakopmund next weekend after emerging winners in their respective semi-final ties at Gobabis’ Legare Stadium on Saturday.

Civics beat Blue Waters 5-4 on penalties after a one-all draw in extra time. The Mighty Civilians converted all their mandatory five kicks, while Waters missed their last penalty kick.  Mighty Gunners secured a 4-1 win over Young African, also on penalties, after a two-all draw in extra time.

Gunners were emphatic with their kicks, and African fluffed theirs in front of a home crowd. Reflecting on their performance, Civics head coach Jeremy Zimmer told New Era Sport yesterday that it was a tough game as both teams brought their A-game.

“I can say we deserved it. Heading forward, it is to make sure we win the game, given the fact that we haven’t won any silverware in a while. I think this is the time for us to win something. So, we are going to go all the way,” he added.

Meanwhile, Gunners’ team manager Leonard Nambandi also acknowledged that the game against Young African wasn’t easy. But going forward, they want to win the cup after failing on two attempts. “Young African showed strength in the second half and gave us a run for our money. In the second half, our players lost focus and they equalised, which piled a lot of pressure on us to force the game into extra time,” he said.

“I believe after two attempts and this becoming the third one, I’m sure it’s our time to win the title. I think it’s high time we win this cup.”

The final is slated for Saturday at the Vineta stadium in Swakopmund.
