Magic Ladies’ participation in Caf qualifiers in limbo

Tura Magic Ladies Football Club’s participation in the 2023 Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) Women’s Championships hangs in limbo after the deadline for registration lapsed.

The reigning champions of the 2022/23 FNB Women’s Super League had set their sights on participating in this year’s Cosafa Women’s Championship, scheduled for August in Durban, South Africa.

The tournament serves as a qualifying event for the highly-lucrative CAF Women’s Champions League.

Unfortunately, news has surfaced that Tura Magic Ladies may have missed the deadline, making their participation in the championship impossible.

In a recent interview with this publication, Tura Magic chairperson Isack Hamata said the team has sought assistance from the Namibia Football Association (NFA) in this matter.

“We have reached out to the NFA regarding our participation in the tournament, and we are eagerly awaiting their response and guidance on the way forward,” he stated.

NFA secretary general Jochen Traut declined to comment on the issue, citing ongoing discussions with the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

“I am unable to provide a comment on the matter at this time. However, I can confirm that we are currently engaged in discussions with CAF, the continental governing body, to determine the appropriate course of action,” he added.

Tura Magic Ladies last competed in the Cosafa Women’s Championship in 2021 during the tournament’s inaugural edition.

Unfortunately, they faced disappointment in the group stages, suffering a 3-0 defeat against Zimbabwean side Black Rhinos Queens and a 1-0 loss to Zambia’s Green Buffaloes.
