The second edition of the highly anticipated Nedbank Volley 1st Tournament will take place at the Embandu football field in Oshakati this Saturday. 

The one-day tournament is an initiative between Connect People to People and the Far North Volleyball Association. 

The volleyball games aim to bring the sport closer to the people, especially in corporate, ministries, businesses and other agencies in the Northern regions. 

The tournament is also a platform for volleyball enthusiasts in said agencies to showcase their skills and passion for the game. 

In addition to the volleyball games, the organisers have also incorporated a 1.5 km, 3 km and 5 km fun walk to add to the list of festivities on the day. 

Last year, over 20 volleyball teams battled it out at the Valombola Vocational Training Centre grounds in Ongwediva to be crowned champions in the Nedbank Volley 1st Tournament. 

The Namibian Correctional Services Volleyball Club scooped top honours as they came out on top, followed by Team Uzo-Tech in second place and Team Ongwediva MediPark in third. 

This year’s tournament promises to be even more captivating, as the games will consist of two main categories, namely six-a-side and two-a-side. 

The winning team in the six-a-side category will walk away with N$6 000 in prize money, while the two-a-side winners will walk away with N$1 500 in prize money. 

Namibian Volleyball Federation spokesperson Hillary ‘Dux’ Imbuwa said: “This is an excellent opportunity for volleyball players to showcase their talent and form lasting connections within the volleyball community”. 

Nedbank Namibia communication and public relations manager Selma Kaulinge said the bank remains committed to supporting initiatives that empower communities and promote social cohesion. 

“After the success of the first tournament, there had to be a sequel to ensure we continue to make the most impact and contribute to the growth of the sport in the region. We wish all the teams luck for Saturday, and ask all players and agencies to continue contributing to the development of volleyball so that it can become a leading sporting code in the country. 

As money experts who do good, we believe it is through social initiatives like this tournament that our efforts come to fruition,” Kaulinge mentioned. 

The Nedbank Volley 1st Tournament is co-sponsored by Far North Volleyball Association, Windhoek Draught, Omulunga Radio and Coca-Cola. 

Registration for the Volleyball 1st Tournament is open until 30 June.
